IOM Club Championships

RACE 4

The last race in this series was sailed in somewhat variable winds with three yachts starting with 'A'  rigs and the rest with 'B' rigs.  Ben using a B rig won the first race but with a slight drop in wind, the A's won out in the next three races.  All changed to A rigs following a break and racing was close and competitive, Jurgen proving the most consistent.  The wind picked up a little during the lunch break and all boats finished with B rigs.  The sailing was most enjoyable with a friendly rivalry and a great day had by all.  Thanks to Jurgen for setting the course and running the event, Mary for scoring and Geoff for the results sheet

RACE 3

Despite the expected 15 knots predicted, the breeze rarely climbed to 10 knots and became even lighter in the afternoon with many holes and significant wind-shifts which kept all the sailors alert.  Seven boats competed and again it was those more suited to the lighter conditions which prevailed.

Racing was close at times  Here Kym (38), Jurgen(37) and Brian(71) engage in a tight first beat

RACE 2

Race 2 in the IOM Club Handicap was sailed at Mawson in light and variable conditions.  It was a beautiful day for enjoying the lake and the weather but a little frustrating for sailing.  Ben began well in the light but suffered by hooking onto a buoy in race 5 while in the lead.  Brian seemed to lift a notch after the lunch break and sailed consistently to clinch the event.  Jeff was unfortunate in suffering from electrical problems.  Kym was sailing a new boat (Reg's old one metre) and had speed at times.  Sailing a one metre needs plenty of practice and he will improve.  Thanks to Bill for being PRO

Race 1 was sailed at Tiranna Way but details are sketchy.  If the PRO from that day can let me know of the results, I will post them here BM

Race 4

The series was sailed at Mawson lakes.  The conditions were testing with gusts into the mid 20 knot range as evidenced by the significant numbers of yachts that were forced to either not compete or not finish a race and that the series concluded after 5 races.  Brian proved again that he is still the one to beat in the ten raters.

Race 3

The race was sailed at Tiranna Way where the conditions were expected to be windy from the NE (15+ Knots) and occasional showers.  Well they got the showers right but the wind dropped out to average well below 5k.  This was a big plus for the marblehead of Ian D as it flew in the light fluky conditions and he sailed very consistently all day.  The  other ten raters picked up during the few 6-8 knot squirts but these were few and far between.  Geoff W really needed another 10 knots to show his potential.  Nevertheless the racing was close in many of the races with Ian B showing occasional excellent boat speed and pointing ability.  Geoff C was doing well until rigging issues caused concern.  Geoff's and Ben's yachts are out of the same plug and they certainly looked a picture footing it out side by side.  Congratulations to Ian who took honours for the day

Race 2

Race 2 was held at Mawson Lakes in a consistent but generally light SE wind..  While Brian was the most consistent on the day, Ian really pushed him all the way with his Marblehead.  Ian Backler and Geoff Cibich both showed good speed at times and are looking for consistency to go up the placings.  Bill was competitive also and with fewer errors of judgement may have done better.  Brian is going to be away for the third race of this series which throws the event wide open for one of the other yachts to take out this event.  Ben M was PRO and did a marvellous job!

Race 1

I have no details from this event but from memory Brian, Ian D and Ben M were the first three place getters.  Jeff Roberts was PRO and all went well!

Marblehead Club Championship

Race 4

The really strong winds forecast held off until after lunch allowing Ian B to force the pace and get 10 races in early before lunch.  In retrospect this was a wise move as the wind picked up from 20 knots to 25 or more with even stronger gusts.  Ian D was the only one brave enough to challenge the conditions and was awarded the last two races.  It was disappointing to have only 4 Marbleheads racing in a club championship as this is the best time to do the small adjustments that make the difference between similar yachts.  Kym again showed his boat is a flyer in the stronger winds and but for a boat half full of water may have taken the event.  Both Geoff and Ian had good speed at times particularly upwind.  Ben had the edge downwind making up for his lack of consistency upwind.  It was this that made the difference in the end.  The racing was often close with just a few metres separating the yachts.  Thanks to Ian B for PRO duties and to Trevor for scoring.  I think the seagull was over the line this time!!

Race 3

This race was rescheduled due to extremely cold weather on the day originally proposed, Sunday 14th June 2009.On that day at Mawson Lakes, three competitors arrived and after discussion, it was agreed to reschedule for Sunday 28th June. At Tiranna Way, West Lakes, the weather was cool and blowing from the northwest and PRO Ian Dowsett set a course which remained fairly true for the day. There were minor variations to the direction, but not enough to worry about changing the start line. The first race started at 10.30 am, followed by a 5 minute break to allow sail changes or other adjustments required by the competitors. Then it was in to the first block of three races. Geoff Roberts threw down the gauntlet by winning the first race, showing that when the wind gets up, his boat was extremely competitive. However, Ben Morris took the next race and established the pattern that was to follow for the rest of the day. Kim Stringer took a little while to settle down to the conditions, but then he managed to establish a steady performance which was consolidated in the afternoon. Brian had some equipment problems that hampered his results while Jurgen appeared to be on the wrong end of boats going the wrong way. Often he was in the right, but he lost places as result of collisions. Geoff Cibich suffered radio problems and his winch would not respond after the first 2 races, so he withdrew. The outcome was a most enjoyable day's sailing, in the end being won by consistent sailing by Ben Morris. (Report by Ian Dowsett)

Race 2

Race 2 was sailed at Mawson Lakes on 17th May in very light winds with many holes where yachts were stationary.  Despite this and because of short course set by PRO Jeff Watson nine races were completed.  Ben M had the edge in these conditions - perhaps the practice, while sailing at Stirling Lake Woorabinda where conditions like this are common, was a big advantage.  Geoff C had good boat speed at times, often being first boat around the first mark.

Ian D cutting it fine at the end

Race 3

The third race was sailed at Mawson Lakes in fine conditions with winds ranging from 5 to 10 knots.  The handicapping was quite accurate as many of the had quite close and thrilling finishes with only metres separating finishers.  Congratulations to Reg F for holding off a very competitive Geoff C.  Considering the fine day, it was a shame that only 7 yachts attended the race.

Race 2

The second race in this series was held at Mawson Lakes on Sunday May 31.  The weather was mild with light winds from the NE.  Kym S was PRO and handled the course setting and handicapping well.  There were no complaints by the participants.  The racing was close and exciting thanks to the effective handicapping.  Reg launched his new marblehead and but for some teething issues was on the way to having a good series.  Ben M seemed to handle the light weather the best but Geoff C and Jeff Roberts were both consistent.  The ten raters suffered from the light conditions but on the few occasions when the breeze picked up they were most competitive
